Allah Rakha Rahman, popularly known as A. R. Rahman grew up in a family of music afficionados and started learning the piano at the nascent age of 4. When financial troubles arose upon his family, he worked in the advertising industry, where he was involved in composing jingles. After a few yours in the industry, he went on to pursue an education in western music. His music compositions are the perfect blend of classical and western music. Known as the man who redefined Indian contemporary music, his work comprises of soundracks of over 150 movies . Some of his most widely appreciated soundtracks were in the movies 'Roja', 'Bombay', Dil Se', 'Taal', 'Lagaan', 'Vandemataram', 'Jodhaa Akbar', 'Slumdog Millionaire', '127 Hours' and 'Rockstar'. Rahman's version of the Indian national song, 'Vande Mataram' rekindled the spirit of patriotism and gained immediate mass appeal. Rahman has been bestowed with the 'Padma Bhushan' and 'Padma Shri', two of India's highest national civilian honours, recognizing his contribution to music, in addition to several other awards including 4 Indian National Film Awards and 28 Filmfare Awards, India's leading recognition for films.
